EPIP industrial heritage programme

Ecclesfield Interpretation Project

In 2011-12 the Industrial Heritage Programme funded an exciting industrial heritage project by the Ecclesfield Conservation Group.

The group worked with well-known local historians Mel and Joan Jones to research and produce a new interpretation board and accompanying leaflet. Together these tell the story of the local industries that once employed many people in the village. Many of these industries were 'hand crafts' and light metal trades including Nail Making, File Cutting and Gimlet and Brace Bit Making. The research for the project included contributions from local residents who donated memories and photographs.

The finished board was unveiled at Ladycroft Meadow (St. Mary's Lane) in a public ceremony on March 24th 2012 which was attended by local people of all ages. This was followed by a celebration and industrial history exhibition in St. Mary's Church, with refreshments provided by John Fairest Funeral Homes. The conservation group have produced a short slide show of the unveiling (click here to view).

After the success of their first board the conservation group decided to continue the project. They applied for, and received, additional funding from the Industrial Heritage Programme to create a further two new interpretation boards and accompanying leaflets about the working past of the village. These were also written by Mel and Joan Jones and were unveiled in a public ceremony on the 1st of December 2012. Again, the ceremony was attended by many local people, and included a local history display and buffet in St. Mary's Church, Ecclesfield. which was provided by Eric Eyre Funeral Services.

During the project a number of important historic documents have been discovered by local people, which give a fascinating insight into some of the villages former industries. These include the Ridge Ledgers, which were donated to the group by members of the Ridge family. The Industrial Heritage programme has provided additional funding for these ledgers and a number of historic industrial photographs of the village to be digitised so that they will be preserved for future generations. You can view some of these documents on the Conservation Group's website (click here to view) and more will be added in the coming months.

Downloadable versions of all three Ecclesfield's Working Past leaflets are available from our downloads page. These can be viewed in Adobe Acrobat (please contact us for a printer-friendly version if you need one). The board and leaflet were both produced by PB graphics.
